I’ve noticed that different blue ballpoint inks have differnt odors. I’ve never noticed this with black inks. I know that different brands do have different formulations. What I’m curious about is what component(s) might account for the different odors. My students asked me this, but neither they nor I were satisifed with the different formulations reason alone. Is there that much difference between blue ink formulas that they smell markedly different?

I don’t think that can be answered due to the patented trademarks of the formulas relative to the breakdown of the volatile organic compounds. Dyes and solvents contents affect the breakdown, but to find the answer you wish might not be learned unless a supplier wishes to supply that information.
