How do I paint with sumi ink on rice paper without the paper getting all wrinkled up? March 7, 2010

Or is it supposed to happen?
Also, when I paint, the ink sometimes looks distorted and messy on the rice paper. I painted some card stock and the ink looked all smooth and pretty. But like with the rice paper, the card stock sort of absorbed the water.
I have a sumi-e book but it doesn’t really say a whole lot about adding the ink into the brush

I think you have your brush too wet. I believe (since I have never done Sumi-e painting) that the technique is almost a dry brush technique. You don’t want to get the rice paper too wet because it will buckle like you are seeing. Do you have a book on Sumi-e that you are following? If not, you can find one at your library. It would probably help.

Edit: I would try another book. Every art book for every medium will have basically the same things in them, every medium has rules. But each author/artist has some things that are slightly different than anyone else. Look at different books until you find one with the information you need.
